Smoothie bowl tips & tricks

Here are some of my top tips and tricks for making smoothie bowls:

  • Freeze your own fresh fruit – it's a great way to reduce food waste.
  • Use a strong blender to get the best consistency. I like to use the Vitamix Ascent series.
  • Don't overblend! Make sure you're blending just until the ingredients are combined and your mixture has a nice thick consistency.
  • Add extra protein by mixing in some flax seeds or your favourite protein powder.
  • Make some homemade granola to add on top of your smoothie bowls!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you add more protein to your smoothie bowl?

Your smoothie bowl will already contain some protein thanks to the Greek yogurt, but if you want to add even more protein, mix in some flax seeds or a scoop of your favourite protein powder.

What are the best toppings to add?

You can add pretty much any toppings you're craving to your smoothie bowl. I like adding on some fresh fruit, granola, shredded coconut, chia seeds, pepitas and hemp hearts.

Can you make this recipe dairy free?

To make a dairy-free smoothie bowl, swap out the plain Greek yogurt for plain vegan yogurt. If you can't find any, you can also use your favourite dairy-free milk, but you'll likely need to add in a bit more frozen fruit to maintain that thick, smoothie bowl texture.

How do you make it thicker?

These bowls will be plenty thick on your own, but if you want to make them even thicker, adjust the amount of yogurt you add or blend in some avocado.

Can you freeze smoothie bowls?

You can't freeze smoothie bowls after they've been blended, but you can assemble freezer smoothie packs ahead of time to make prep easier. Add all your frozen fruit to a Ziploc bag and freeze for up to 3 months.

Meal prepping these smoothie bowls

These smoothie bowls should be served immediately for the best consistency. If you want to meal prep your bowls, I'd recommend assembling freezer smoothie packs ahead of time. Add all the frozen ingredients into a Ziploc bag and store in the freezer for up to 3 months. When you're ready to make your smoothie bowl, all you have to do is dump the smoothie pack into the blender along with your 2 cups of yogurt and blend. Add on your favourite toppings and voila!

Meal Prep Tools

  • TheVitamix personal seriesis great for making just one or two smoothies at a time.
  • So is theMagic BulletorNutri Bullet– the only hang up here is that I find I have to replace these models once every couple years or so because the motor eventually burns out.
  • TheVitamix Ascent seriesis my fave though – it's self-cleaning so you aren't left with a ton of mess and it's perfect for if you're prepping 3-4 smoothies at a time. It can tear through anything to make the smoothest smoothie, even ice!

Add more protein by blending in some flax seeds or protein powder.

Make somehomemade granolato add on top of your smoothie bowls.

To make this recipe dairy-free, use vegan yogurt or dairy-free milk (if you're using milk, the consistency will be thinner, so you might need to add more frozen fruit).
